Nestled at 1,740 metres in the Toubkal National Park, Imlil is the gateway village to the highest peak in North Africa — Jebel Toubkal at 4,167 metres. This full-day excursion from Marrakech takes you into the heart of the Berber Amazigh homeland, through some of the most dramatic mountain scenery on the continent.
The drive from Marrakech to Imlil takes 1.5 hours, climbing steadily through the Mizane Valley past the village of Asni — home to one of the most colourful weekly Berber markets in the region, held every Saturday. In Asni, farmers, shepherds, and traders from across the Atlas gather to buy and sell livestock, produce, spices, and traditional crafts.
From Asni, the road climbs steeply to Imlil, where the air is crisp and clear and the views of the Toubkal massif are extraordinary. Explore the village with your guide — visit the local cooperative selling Berber carpets and textiles, taste fresh walnut oil and dried mountain herbs, and watch local craftsmen at work in their workshops.
The surrounding trails offer spectacular walking for all abilities — from gentle valley walks to challenging climbs toward the Toubkal base camp. Enjoy lunch in a traditional Berber gite with stunning mountain views, then descend back to Marrakech refreshed, invigorated, and inspired by the extraordinary resilience and culture of the High Atlas Berber communities.

1
Can I start trekking to Mount Toubkal from this excursion?

What is special about the Asni Berber market?
The Saturday market in Asni is one of the most authentic Berber weekly souks in the High Atlas, drawing farmers and traders from dozens of mountain villages.
