At 110 metres high, the Ouzoud Waterfalls are the tallest and most spectacular waterfalls in North Africa, and one of Morocco's most awe-inspiring natural wonders. Located 150km northeast of Marrakech in the Middle Atlas foothills, this full-day excursion is well worth the journey.
The drive itself is a pleasure, passing through the fertile plains of the Haouz region, dotted with olive and argan trees, before climbing into the red-rock canyons of the Aït Benhaddou. As you approach Ouzoud, you'll hear the roar of the falls before you see them — three separate cascades thundering into a turquoise pool below, framed by ancient olive groves and rainbow-catching mist.
Descend via a dramatic zigzag path through olive terraces to reach the base of the falls, where local Berber boat operators ferry visitors across the emerald pool. Barbary macaque monkeys — rare and playful — inhabit the cliffs and will often approach visitors looking for snacks. Swimming in the natural pools below the falls is possible and highly recommended.
Enjoy a traditional Berber lunch at one of the terrace restaurants overlooking the falls, then explore the nearby gorge and the old olive oil mills carved into the rock. This is Morocco in its rawest, most beautiful form — a full sensory experience of sound, colour, and mist.
