The road to Essaouira crosses the Haouz plain and the argan tree forest — this is the only region in the world where argan trees grow, and you'll often see goats perched in the branches eating the fruit. Stop at a women's argan cooperative to witness the traditional oil-making process and taste fresh argan products.

Entering through the ancient Bab Doukkala gate, you step into one of Africa's most atmospheric medinas, with its striking blue and white architecture, narrow cobblestone streets, and galleries showcasing the renowned Gnawa music art tradition. The ramparts offer sweeping views of the crashing Atlantic surf, and the port bustles with blue-painted fishing boats and fresh-caught seafood.

Explore the fortified Skala sea bastion, built in the 18th century and still studded with Portuguese bronze cannons, walk the wide sandy beach backed by sand dunes, and browse the woodwork souks where craftsmen fashion the local thuya wood into extraordinary inlaid furniture and jewellery boxes.
